ABOUT OUR NEXT
COUNTY JUDGE

Dexter L. McCoy has never waited for someone else to fight for him, and he will never stop fighting for Fort Bend County. Born into humble beginnings and raised in our community, Dexter knows firsthand that when opportunity meets grit, anything is possible. His life is proof that where you start should not determine how far you can go, and this is why he is committed to building a county where every family has a fair shot.

EDUCATION

Built from Community and Focused on Justice

A proud product of Fort Bend ISD schools, Dexter’s journey began at Hodges Bend Middle School and William B. Travis High School. He took that hometown foundation to Boston University, where he studied Broadcast Journalism and Political Science, and where he found his voice as an advocate.

At Boston University, Dexter did not simply participate, he led. He fought to build belonging and power for marginalized students through the Admissions Student Diversity Board and as president of the Black Student Union.

He was initiated into the historic Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 2013, joining a brotherhood rooted in service and social change.

CAREER

Fighting for People

Every step of Dexter’s career has been grounded in a simple belief: people deserve a government that has their back.

His leadership journey took off as Boston University Student Body President, where he tackled campus safety and quality of life challenges, championed affordable education nationwide, and helped the University secure over $1 billion dollars in philanthropic support.

As Chair of the Boston Council of Undergraduate Student Presidents, Dexter represented more than 130,000 students, fighting for reliable transportation and equitable access to resources.

Dexter continued serving young people in Washington, D. C., helping create the Office of Student Affairs in the DC Public Schools system and launching programs that ensured underserved students were seen, heard, and valued.

During his service in the Obama Administration, he advanced policies to expand college access and uphold the right to learn free from harassment, protecting millions of children across the nation.

Dexter then returned home to Fort Bend County to pour that experience into the community that raised him.

As a leader in Fort Bend ISD, he equipped students, educators, and parents to build stronger, more connected schools. He continued his advocacy on the Gulf Coast Workforce Development Board, stewarding a nearly $400 million regional budget for job growth and training, ensuring working families get real pathways to opportunity.

Dexter expanded his fight for Fort Bend County when he joined the Office of the County Judge. After Winter Storm Uri, he helped deliver relief through a nonprofit grant program, launched a rural broadband expansion partnership with Comcast, and managed key initiatives that strengthened services countywide.

His political work began long before holding office, including serving on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential advance team and volunteering with Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate campaign.

FAMILY

Rooted in Resilience and Raised by Fort Bend

Dexter’s story began in rural Louisiana, born to a teenage mother and into circumstances that could have limited his future. But when his family came to Fort Bend County, everything changed.

His parents, Helen and Duane, showed Dexter that grit, education, and faith can rewrite any story. At 13, he started his own lawn care business, learning early what it means to serve customers, earn trust, and build something of your own.

Those lessons fueled his commitment to every family striving for a better life.

Today, Dexter and his wife Chelsea are raising their daughters, Piper and Porter, in Richmond along with their Goldendoodle Fitz. The same promise that Fort Bend provided Dexter is the promise he is fighting to protect for them and for every child in this county.
